Industry 4.0 is nearer than you think

By Bernard McMahon

Industry 4.0 or the 4th Industrial Revolution will transform industry. It is clear that when implemented well, digitally based technologies and systems can improve productivity, quality and reduce costs in manufacturing. The new global transformation and implementation of cyber-physical systems brought to us through 4IR, will enable companies to remain competitive.

With Brexit around the corner, the UK needs to seize I4.0 as an opportunity to remain globally competitive and UK manufacturers need a way to increase their business resilience in these difficult times, therefore, SME engagement in I4.0 could fuel economic prosperity of the UK.

Our partners Freeths and Hampletons have launched a programme in Sheffield to help to build a common understanding of definitions, standards, and a common glossary of terms.

The programme will also seek to answer key questions:

  • Where do we start?
  • Where can I see it?
  • What is government doing?

NTH is working closely with universities, businesses, and research establishments to build an ecosystem which could put Sheffield at the heart of I4.0 in the UK.
